Book Review: The Reluctant Fundamentalist

The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid Review

The Reluctant Fundamentalist

I reallllyyy enjoyed this book. From Ch1- Ch12 i was engaged.

*A little summary about the book*

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is about an Pakistani boy named Changez. He gets accepted into Princeton Universality and into this Financing Company called Underwood Samson. A small company in which only a few are accepted. Changez rises to the top. He ranks #1 in the company, hes spending time with a girl he became close to, Changez world becomes an roller coaster once 911 hits. With working in the Big Apple at that time as a Pakistani and being in love or infatuated with an American woman, to the war that was taking place in his hometown ,Lahore in Pakistan where his family resides. Grown Changez tells the story of his life to and American in the course of a day.

Now let the loving begin shall we:

Characters:(★★★★)

I believe the characters were developed well. Changez, Erica,Wainwright,Jim even the minor vjarcaters seemed to have such personality. I could fall in love with Changez use of words. Some of his description of things dove inside of my mind and heart.

Setting: (★★★1/2)

The setting was done and explained very well. It wasn't overly descriptive and gave room for the reader to create a world of their own within the world of the character.

Conflict:(★★★★)

There was so much conflict in this novella. Here are a list of some:

1) Changez being an Pakistani in NYC before, during and after 911
2) Changez relationship with Erica and a love triangle between Erica, Changez and Chris( you'll find out who he is). Such an interesting plot.
3) The war happening in Pakistan where Changez family resides.
4) In our world today with the mystery of how this book which included 911 was written before 911 occurred.

Flow, Pace and Writing:(★★★★★)

In this book Changez is telling the story of his life to an American. This takes place for a day. But in Changez telling this story there is another time frame. That of which is his past which takes place over some days sometimes months and then sometimes years. Each chapter in the book was about 20 pages in length and there are 12 chapters in total. I like the pace and flow.

I LOVED the writing style. I cant say that enough. You Mohsin Hamod have taken me on a journey with this American fellow and i Love it. You made such sweet love on the canvas of paper with words. I LOVE YOUR WRITING! (Period).

My Fav Ch's:

My favorite Chapters were those of which Changez spent with Erica or spoke of her.. How they made love, how he envisioned they'd be.
*( I know I know Hopeless Romantic, That I am. I LOVE, love)*

Therefore:

That being said my rating for The Reluctant Fundamentalist is:( Drum Role Please)(★★★★) and the trumpets sound.

I would recommend The Reluctant Fundamentalist to anyone. Although it may be an sensitive area for some, it doesn't heavily delve into the devastation and tragedy of 911. There is more to the story and I find it enjoyable. But don't just take it from me. See for yourself.
